A new store does not need the same app list as a large brand. You need enough to learn why people buy, why they leave, and whether each order makes money.

1. Email capture and recovery

Use Shopify’s built-in email features while volume is low. Move to a dedicated platform when you need better targeting, more useful automations, or help with deliverability. A bigger template library by itself is not a good reason to switch.

WHEN TO UPGRADE

You know which email or automation you need, how many people it will reach, and how it could repay the monthly fee.

2. Reviews and social proof

Keep a review app when it regularly collects useful feedback and displays it cleanly on product pages. Avoid paying for separate loyalty, referral, and review apps until each one has enough activity to matter.

3. Analytics and behavior

Start with Shopify Analytics, Search Console, and one privacy-conscious behavior tool if you need it. Build one weekly scorecard you trust. Five dashboards that disagree will not help you make a better decision.

4. Merchandising or conversion

Choose the problem in front of you: bundles, subscriptions, landing pages, or upsells. Test one change at a time. If you install four sales apps together, you will not know which one helped.

5. Fulfillment or support

This slot depends on how you run the store. A busy support inbox may justify a help desk. Complicated shipping may justify a rules app. If the work is still manageable by hand, write down the process before you automate it.

The rule for app number six

Write down the problem, today’s result, the improvement you expect, the full monthly price, and what must happen within 30 days for the app to stay. If you cannot answer all five, wait before buying.

Sources and update notes

We use current vendor documentation and Shopify App Store listings to check plans and features. The way an app is set up matters more to speed than the number of apps alone. This guide was last reviewed on August 14, 2026.
